Beetroot (Red beet)

from £1.80

Beetroot is a root vegetable containing Betalain which protect cellular components from oxidative injury and supports the body's natural detox process. Betalain can help support emotional health.

It is recommended to roast or steam it to preserve the colour and nutrition value- instead of dissolving it into the cooking water during boiling. To avoid getting your hands stained by beetroot juice, wear disposable gloves or apply some lemon juice on your hands before handling the beets.

The Romans were the first people to cultivate beetroot, mostly for the leaves rather than the root; Beetroot used to be smaller and less sweet than the variety that are available now. Thanks to selective breeding, the root grew bigger, sweeter and more vividly coloured, giving rise to the tasty and adaptable vegetable we enjoy today.
