The word ‘Nectarines’ means sweet as nectar. Peaches and nectarines are related stone fruits while nectarines are usually smaller in size with stronger aromas than peaches. Nectarines are a type of peach without the fuzzy skin even though they are regarded commercially as different fruits: Peach skin is rather velvety while it is smooth for nectarine. They're nutritionally similar, boasting comparable amounts of natural sugars, fibre and micronutrients. While peaches are more appropriate for baking and softer-textured recipes, nectarines stay firm while cooking.

They should never be refrigerated until they are fully ripe. Peaches and nectarines will continue to ripen after they've been harvested if you leave them at room temperature. Chilling them before that will result in the fruit loosing flavour. You do not need to peel the skin off nectarines.

Fresh nectarines are best in the summer months.
